Grassroots Athlete Development

As a leader in my Community, I feel that I have a responsibility to promote and support youth participation in order to “Grow the Game”.  Whether it is new players exploring Volleyball and its tremendous ability to create social connections, or a committed athlete who strives to reach their full potential, I have focused on always being available to engage in youth programs both indoor and on the beach.  Over the past 25+ years living on Vancouver Island, I have initiated numerous grassroots development programs, many which I am still involved in as a lead or mentor coach.  In addition to providing both administrative and technical leadership to “Mariners Volleyball Club”, as a Director for many years, two current programs that I am involved in are the Fall Skill Development Series for athletes ranging from Grade 3 to Grade 10, and the lead coach for MVC Beach programs, including skill development and competitive performance programs.  In 2018, I was recognized by the BC Games Society, with a Sport BC Community Sport Hero Award, for my time and efforts developing Community based sport.

Additionally, one of my favorite programs that I initiated and ran from 2008-2014 was the “All Canadian” Setters Academy.  This summer camp, which attracted players from across the Province of British Columbia was an intensive curriculum which covered technical, tactical, physical and mental training for setters.  Many of the participants attended multiple years enjoying very successful school and club careers before moving on to post-secondary opportunities.  I am very excited that this program will return in 2018 – The All-Canadian Setters and Libero Camp.

I have had the opportunity to be a part of this camp as both a player and a coach, and I believe it is one of the best camps available for any player wanting to improve their setting skills. The amount of QUALITY setting reps players get at this camp far exceed that of any other training camps. Aside from the physical training, as a player I always got a lot out of the mental training session, getting to hear from university athletes about their experiences and how they moved on to the next level. I have spent many hours with Rick both in group and individual training sessions, and my work with him has definitely helped me develop into the player I am today.  I would highly recommend this camp to players of any position who are looking to take their game to the next level.

My greatest source of pride has been watching my children progress through the School and Club systems.  I have been rewarded by being part of their journey as their coach and biggest fan. (click “children” above for a short video.)
